Our Journey To Recovery

Wednesday October 23rd

Today has been very eventful in that Christopher walked in a upright walker over eighty feet. He had a lot of support from Anne, Kira, Rob and I but most of it was just keeping him standing up straight the walking he did pretty much on his own.

Maggie and a Temple University therapy student Danielle helped Christopher this morning with bathing and dressing. During each session they are concentrating on him standing and signing yes and no. He is getting much more consistent with the no. Yes has been good for a while now.

I received a call from Dr. Baldwin's office today, they have moved Christopher's date for recasting forward to October 30th. We aren't sure what that does to our schedule here, hopefully we can stay as planned otherwise we will have to change flights again. Delta is loving us.

Debbie sent me an excerpt from an article she found talking about hugs, Christopher has quite a reputation going up here, he is definitely spreading the love.

"Hugging is a form of communication because it can say things you don't have the words for. And the nicest thing about a hug is that you usually can't give one without getting one back.Experiments have proven that hugging can make people feel better about themselves, positively affect children's IQ and language skills, and enhance the mental outlook of the person who is being hugged as well as the hugger.  Hugging is a very special form of touch therapy that contributes to the way a person heals and his/her overall health. When the need for a hug is satisfied, the person becomes emotionally and physically stronger and better able to deal with life's little problems."

We are conquering the world one hug at a time.

  1. It is so amazing to see Christopher standing up so straight and so tall - wonderful. I was holding my breath and cheered when he made his basket!
Debbie, I loved your research on hugs. When moving to the US form South America the first thing I had to learn was NOT to hug everybody - it was sad (and forget about kissing!!!). With the years all my friends and coworkers have gotten used to my hugs and my kids' friends all give the best hugs. Kudos to Christopher for creating connections that make him feel well and make others feel even better.
    Much love,
    Alicia
